Contracts

What happens if I sign what the customer sent?

Most customers send their own paper, and it is written for them. It may say you are paid in ninety days, that they own whatever you make, that only they can end it. None of that is unusual, and all of it can be changed if someone asks before you sign.

We read the contract the way you will have to live with it, tell you in plain words what each clause does and which are worth a fight, and send your changes to the other side. For the contracts you send out, we write one set of terms that fits your work, so you stop rewriting them every time.

How it runs

What happens to a contract you send us

  1. 01

    Step 1: You send it

Email the draft and tell us the one thing you are most afraid of in it. That is where we start.

  2. 02

Step 2: Notes in plain words

We mark the clauses that matter, say what each means for you and propose a change for each.

  3. 03

Step 3: A call about it

Fifteen minutes on video to go through the notes. You decide which changes to ask for.

  4. 04

Step 4: Changes to the other side

We send your changes, answer their reply and tell you when it is safe to sign.

What owners ask about contracts

How long does a review take?

We give you a date on the first call, before you pay anything. Short agreements are quick; a long lease takes longer, and we say so.

Will you talk to the other side for me?

Yes. Your changes go from us, in writing, so you are not negotiating by text with a customer you want to keep.

Can you write my own customer terms?

Yes. A one- or two-page agreement for your work, with payment dates, what happens when the scope changes and how either of you can end it.

Holding a contract you haven’t signed?

Send it over and we will tell you what it will cost to read.
